SUMMARY:Pinnacle Falls Community
DESCRIPTION:Regional Director Special Trip\n\n\nPinnacle Falls Community\n\n\nHenderson County\, NC\n\n\nRegional Director: Rita Zollinger\n\n\n \n\n\nNOTE THE EARLIER START TIME\n\n\n \n\n\nThe forest is beautiful\, and the streams are full with waterfalls and cascades abounding from the headwaters through the length of Pinnacle Falls Community along Cabin Creek and its tributaries. The 350 acre ridge and valley community is nestled between Pinnacle Mountain\, Hammond Mountain and Huckleberry Ridge in Henderson County\, North Carolina.\n\n\n \n\n\nCeille and Jim Welch have once again invited us to their cabin. Their hospitality extends to coffee\, juice\, and donuts on their long front porch\, and restroom use before our walk.\n\n\n \n\n\nFor the morning and early afternoon saunter there is much to see walking up the hill to the top of the cul de sac and back down to the lower Huckleberry Lane\, and along it to Cabin Creek trail\, continuing to the falls. We will explore Pinnacle Falls Lane below the bridge to see the old cabin chimney which dates to early last century.\n\n\n \n\n\nAlong the way we may see Pink Lady Slipper Orchids\, Violets\, Bluets\, Horse sugar and perhaps Jack-in-the-pulpit and Trillium. Let’s see what else our wildflowers walk shows!\n\n\n \n\n\nWe may spot some furry and feathered residents — chipmunks\, groundhogs\, deer\, black bear\, bobcat\, or turkeys along with a variety of amphibians and reptiles.\n\n\n \n\n\nFor those adventurous souls\, there is a trail\, albeit steep in places\, to the top of Huckleberry Ridge behind their cabin if anyone wants to see the flora there. It is not an easy trail but does exhibit a few different plants and good views across the valley. There is a rope installed along the steepest part of the ridge.\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nWelch Cabin Location: \n\n\nPinnacle Falls Community\n\n\n171 Juniper Berry Lane\n\n\nHendersonville\, NC\n\n\n \n\n\nThere is plenty of parking on Berry Lane cul de sac. Jim and I will be at the Pinnacle Falls Community gate to greet you. From there\, we’ll proceed to Juniper Berry Lane.\n\n\n \n\n\nDirections to rendezvous at Pinnacle Falls Community gate:\n4459 Ball Mountain Rd\, Zirconia\, NC 28790\n\n\n\nFrom I-26 take Exit 54 in NC to Highway 25 South.\n\n\n\n\nTake Exit 5\, Tuxedo/Flat Rock/ 225. Turn left onto S 225 to Tuxedo.\n\n\nDrive approximately 1.7 miles passing Lake Summit on the left\, then passing the Fire Department on your right; at Camp Greystone on the left\, turn right onto Mount Olivet Road. In 0.1 mile immediately after you pass under the bridge\, Mount Olivet Road makes a sharp left. Follow road 3.3 miles to the top of the mountain where road ends at a “T”. Mount Olivet Baptist Church will be on your left at the top. Turn left on Pinnacle Mountain Road. Go 0.1 mile\, turn left onto Pinnacle Falls Lane gateway. The distance from I-26 is about ten miles and it takes 15-20 minutes driving time.\n\n\n \n\n\nFrom Greenville: via US 25 take Exit 3 just across the SC/NC line\, turn right and then left on 225; and opposite Camp Greystone turn left onto Mt. Olivet Road. In 0.1 mile immediately after you pass under the bridge\, Mount Olivet Road makes a sharp left. Follow road 3.3 miles to the top of the mountain where road ends at a “T”. SUMMARY:Sandy Island Kayak Trip
DESCRIPTION:Sandy Island Kayak Trip\nHorry County\n10:00 AM Launch Time (please arrive early!)\nTrip Leader: Mandy Farris Johnson \nThis month we will be paddling to the southern end of Sandy Island\, led by Mandy Johnson. We will need to provide our own boats\, paddles\, and life preservers. If you do not have a boat\, but want to join us\, please let Gordon Murphy or Kim Frampton McManus know as several SCAN members have multiple boats that you can use. Mandy recommends we use a kayak rather than a canoe. Our last trip to Sandy Island was to the northern end of the island and we had only a short time to explore. This trip we will have around four to five hours to explore. Mandy says that we will have an easy two-mile paddle from Wacca Wache Marina and about a mile and a half walk to the Carolina bays on the island where we’ll see carnivorous plants. Based on a check of the tide table\, we should be paddling with the tide both going to and leaving the island. Plan to get wet and muddy and be prepared for insects. Pack your lunch and plenty of water. \nPlease note that we want to launch at 10:00\, so plan to be there a few minutes early. We will drop the boats at the landing and park the vehicles in the overflow parking lot (about a 500-yard walk). There are port-a-johns at the landing\, but no facilities on the island. \nWacca Wache Marina\n1950 Wachesaw Rd\nMurrells Inlet\, SC 29576 \n33.562130°\n-79.085558° \nDirections from the intersection of 4th Avenue and Main Street in Conway:\nTake US 501 south to SC 707 in Socastee.\nTurn right and go 7.9 miles to Prince Creek Parkway.\nGo 2 miles and turn right onto Wachesaw Road (S-22-62) and go approximately 0.8-mile to the marina. \nDirections from the intersection of North Fraser Street and Church Street in Georgetown:\nGo approximately 20.8 miles on US 17 N.\nTurn left onto Wachesaw Road and go 2.5 miles to the marina. \nDinner will most likely be at Deck 383 right at the marina:\nhttp://www.deck383.com/
