Bear Wallow Trail

August 27, 2016 @ 10:30 am - 4:00 pm

N35.4607, W-82.3681

Map

Bearwallow Mountain was privately owned. In 2009 the owners handed over a conservation easement to preserve these 81 acres. Bearwallow Mountain is located in northeastern Henderson County, North Carolina and straddles the Eastern Continental Divide.

What a beautiful area to explore. After a mile walk to the 4,232ft above sea level summit, there are open meadows and views of Hickory Nut Gorge, Chimney Rock, and Lake Lure, Mount Mitchell, Mount Pisgah, and the Balsams. The elevation gain is a little over 500’. You can walk the gravel road or take the trail which parallels the road. We may share the views with the grazing cows enjoying the grassy summit.

The kiosk notes that Bearwallow is the most biologically diverse place in the entire Appalachian Mountains. Some flora to spot are black birch, chestnut oak and red oaks, white ash, eastern hemlock and Carolina hemlocks, Catawba and Rosebay rhododendrons, flame azaleas, basswood, shagbark hickories, buckeyes, black locust, striped maple, ferns, mosses, lichens, wildflowers… and so much more. Notice how the flora changes as soil pH changes. The summit provides a grove of shag bark hickories and stunted old growth trees which may be older than 300 years.
