Congaree national Park

January 2005

Welcome to 2005!
I am looking forward to the coming SCAN year. Below is the list of officer nominees, who should be a good crew with whom to work. Our last fieldtrip in 2004, to Congaree National Park, was held on a gorgeous day, and we were blessed with two highly informed guests, Dr. John Nelson, curator of the USC Herbarium, and John Cely, recently retired from DNR. We enjoyed having them. Those who stayed to the end got to see parts of the Cedar Creek flood plain, plus some oxbow lakes that are 'off the beaten track' and learned a lot more about the area. Personally I appreciated the folks who left early to make certain I made it back to my car, as I had slipped on the mud adjacent to the creek and, as I found out late that afternoon, I broke three bones in my lower leg & ankle. It clipped my wings over the holidays, but I should be hobbling by the annual meeting. I have heard some tales about one group who had to wade out. I would have like to have seen that…from dry land. We are very fortunate to have such a wonderful national park in our own backyard.

Our annual meeting will be held on January 22nd at the South Carolina State Museum, our original 'parent organization'. Officially we start at 10 a.m., but coffee and light refreshments (like fresh Krispy Kremes) will be available about 9:30. Come early and socialize.

I am excited about this year's pair of guest speakers. We have not featured ecosystems and plants for several years. This year they head the billing. Details will follow. After lunch (on your own) we have the highlights of the 2004 fieldtrips in a couple of presentations, followed by the business meeting.

After the meeting we are invited to the Ciegler house in West Columbia for a pot luck party & supper (lite). These are always great fun! Directions will be available at the meeting. It is actually easy to find. You can plan to stop to pick up a pizza at the Pizza Hut just past I-26 or put a cooler in your car. There is a microwave for re-heating hot items. Jan will provide beverages and paper plates, plus some alcoholic beverages as well, but contributions to the last are always welcome!
