About SCAN

Founded in 1976 by naturalist Rudy Mancke, now naturalist and co-host of the well-known public television program NatureScene, SCAN is composed of people who have an amateur or professional interest in the natural history of South Carolina. The primary mission of SCAN is to gather and share factual natural history information among its membership and with the general public. SCAN publishes checklists of the flora and fauna of the state, with an overall goal of updating natural history information in all areas.

Each month, we gather to explore a specific natural area of the state. A newsletter is circulated following each meeting with a list of plants and animals seen during the previous trip, along with an announcement of the upcoming fieldtrip. Other information of interest to naturalists may be included.

If you are also fascinated by South Carolina's natural history and think you might like to join us, find out more in our membership information.
